The Dengbêj: Living Archives of Kurdish History

The Dengbêj (literally voice-giver) is the sacred guardian of Kurdish collective memory. Performing long, unwritten epic poems (Kilam) entirely a cappella without musical accompaniment, the Dengbêj places a hand against the ear to modulate soaring microtonal vocal runs that echo across mountain valleys. They recount historical battles, heroic rebellions, tragic romances, and natural disasters, ensuring history survived when written Kurdish was banned.
